Wuthering Heights
did anyone not like wuthering heights or is it just me?
i read this book in 7th grade
hated every minute of it
i pretty much told my teacher she had no taste in books after she recommended this to me along with Jane Eyre and other euro-centric…
honestly reading jane eyre and wuthering heights made me regret that i ever let on to being a voracious black reader to a bunch of white teachers in magnet school. sheeeittt i woulda been content had they plopped hop on pop in front of my face over jane eyre, at least that has action
Bolding mine but yeah.
So much of that my whole scholastic career. At one point i had to bring my actual personal copies of certain books to “prove” that I was reading them rather than the suggested school reading. It was bananas.
I also remember being told that some of what I was reading was inappropriate. LOL.
It was basically the Twilight of its time. Only less sanitized. I guess.
‘Gosh, creepy abusive men are hot!’
Creeped me the fuck out. Then I read this “feminist” literary criticism talking about how Cathy being bitten by a dog was a form of “female castration” because a dogs mouth looks like a vagina and I just..couldn’t even…
I read it entirely.
At the time when it was assigned I was way more into reading de Sade and Victorian porn and a lot of poetry.
I tried to read it again when I was in my 20’s and yeah…nope.

I HATED THAT BOOK. All of the characters are unlikable and uninteresting. I don’t understand why anyone in the real world would like Heathcliff.
